Rochester and Chatham

Rochester Castle
Rochester Castle

Rochester is situated on the River Medway just east of London and it’s most famous son is Charles Dickens, writer and a big contributor to modern Christmas as we know it.

A Victorian shopping street right out of Dicken Christmas Carol.

Explore the Victoriana style main street with old fashioned sweet shops, cafes and bookstores.  Visit the house that Charles Dickens lived in and as you wonder around the streets, we’ll see numerous reference points and sites of inspiration for some of Dickens most famous works.

Rochester is a city and so like every other British city has a wonderful Cathedral and just a minute away is Rochester Castle too.

Adjoining Rochester is the town of Chatham with its very impressive naval centre. Climb aboard old sailing vessels or explore a nuclear submarine.  Visit what was the world’s longest brick built building and see how ropes are made, obviously important to sailing vessels but perhaps surprisingly still manufacturing today for the British and American military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ships and submarines are just some of the sights at Chatham.

Chatham has always been an important military centre and in its naval museum you can relive the wars and raids of the Dutch navy or visit the home of The Royal Engineers and see their long history which continues to this day.  Chatham is also home to a large Napoleonic fortress.

Whatever you want to experience, you’ll find it in Rochester and Chatham.
