Stonehenge, Avebury and the Magna Carta

Stonehenge one open Salisbury plains
Stonehenge on the open Salisbury Plain

Stonehenge is right up there with the Pyramids as a wonder of the world and it would be a shame to visit Britain without marvelling at their wonder.

Constructed approximately 5,000 years ago Stonehenge is just one of hundreds of such sites scattered around the British countryside but none has captured the imagination like Stonehenge.  Amazingly Stonehenge is just the latest structure on the site but there is evidence of construction works being on the site 10,000 years ago.  Their exact nature is something open to debate; could Stonehenge be an ancient observatory or time-keeping device or perhaps a religious or healing centre but it seems clear these massive stones were carried hundreds of miles away from Wales. What is indisputable is that there is something special at Stonehenge and you’ll feel connected with our ancestors thousands of years ago.

Nearby is the ancient monument of Avebury a mere youngest at just 4,400 years old and part of the greater Stonehenge site and actually much greater in size than Stonehenge itself along with another site, Silbury Hill burial mound.

If time permits then can travel the short distance to the old city of Salisbury.  Salisbury has a number of interesting shopping streets centred around Salisbury Cathedral.  The Cathedral itself is a sight to behold but it has the additional wonder of housing one of the original copies of the Magna Carta, the first legal document granting rights to normal people against the King and the state.  The Magna Carta contains important principles that are now incorporated in law around the world and was an inspiration behind The French Revolution and the American Constitution.
