Stratford Upon Avon

One of many beautiful buildings on our Shakespeare tour.

Stratford Upon Avon is a beautiful and picturesque English town in its own right situated as it is on the banks of the River Avon with a wealth of local shops and history.  Of course most people visit Stratford for one reason, it being the centre of all things William Shakespeare.

Here we can visit a number of Shakespeare-related houses including Halls Croft, which was owned by his daughter which stands next to New Place, which was owned by Shakespeare himself.  A mile or so away is the cottage belonging to the family of his wife, Anne Hattaway’s cottage, as well as Palmers Farm, home of Shakespeares mother.  These properties are all in good condition as they are managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.   If it takes your interest you can also visit the Shakespeares grave.

If all this isn’t enough, then there is also Harvard House, owned by John Harvard, founder of Harvard University in the USA, which is open to the public.

There are many good restaurants and pubs in Stratford Upon Avon along with its delightful riverside park with possible river cruises.  Stratford Upon Avon makes for a full days visit but also works wonderfully well when combined with an overnight stay and then a day at nearby Warwick Castle.
