I’ve always been a horror fan and within that genre is a niche area about creepy dolls. One of my favourite episodes of the old Black and White show The Twilight Zone features Talking Tina and the 1980’s saw Chucky who was possessed by an ancient evil demon. More recently Annabelle has strutted her stuff in the Conjuring Universe of horror films and now we have M3gan which adds a sci-fi twist to the tale of evil dolls.
M3GAN is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a life-like doll programmed to be a child’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. Designed by brilliant toy-company roboticist Gemma, M3gan can listen and watch and learn as she becomes friend and teacher, playmate and protector, for the child she is bonded to.

When Gemma suddenly becomes the caretaker of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, Cady, Gemma’s unsure and unprepared to be a parent. Under intense pressure at work, Gemma decides to pair her M3gan prototype with Cady in an attempt to resolve both problems—a decision that will have unimaginable consequences.
M3gan is paired with Cady and is sworn to be her playmate, best friend and of course to ensure M3gan suffers no harm. M3gan is something of a rushed prototype but for a while all seems to be going well. Little Cady is happy at last and the pair are inseparable.
One day though whilst M3gan is in the laboratory for maintenance and research, she inadvertently learns that Cady’s parents died which leads her to instantly download information on death, a concept M3gan was previously unaware of and also one which her programming safeguards have not yet been programmed to include. Hhhmm okay!
Gemma is trying her best to keep Cady from being sent away with irksome grandparents of her deceased father but everything is getting on top of her. The counsellor who evaluates the situation warns her things need to improve and also that Cady needs to spend less time with M3gan.
Cady though doesn’t want that at all M3gan begins to take her vow not to let any harm come to Cady to the extreme. First to fall foul of M3gan is next doors aggressive dog but if a ‘toy’ can make a dog disappear, how long can it be before humans go the same way, especially humans trying to break up her pairing with Cady?
M3gan isn’t an out and out horror film, it’s a bit of a satire too and makes fun of the tech and toy industries amongst other things. It’s a very slick film and when things begin to turn darker, it does so very well if not in a very scary way.
All of the cast do a tremendous job and M3gan is eerily humanlike whilst not quite being human.
I’m Stephen and I will NEVER let anything bad happen to you 🙂
Ooh, that looks spooky! Victorian china dolls that turn evil, echoing children’s voices singing “Boys and girls come out to play” or “Georgie Porgie” always freaks me out!
Shame American trailers basically show a summary of the entire plot! Subtlety is not their strong point!

Yes it’s really good. It’s not out and out gore but a bit chilling with that feeling everything is getting worse. Yes it is a shame about their trailers. There are rarely any surprises in American films if you have watched the trailer whilst I watched Empire of Light on Monday after seeing the advertising the night before and it made me want to watch it and not a single thing of note in the film is really in the advert. I reviewed that too for next week but if you like Olivia Colman you’d love it.

I agree. Saw the trailer while watching Avatar. Must say the trailer was more interesting than the movie.

It’s funny how often that happens with big movies. I am going to watch Tar today. I’ve not seen any advertising for it and it’s not shown in many screens but everyone who has watched it seems to have really enjoyed it!

I just got back from seeing M3GAN and I liked it. It certainly isn’t entirely horror and is able to address some obvious childhood issues. One very nice and tender moment between M3Gan and Cady even brought me to tears. It will be interesting to see where the planned sequel for 2025 will go. Thank you for your review.
