Re-creating a David Bowie photo from a vague memory.

Back in August 1965 and a chap called Davy Jones hadn’t yet quite made the big time. You might know who Davy Jones was but you’ve likely heard of who he became, David Bowie.

The photo below was a promotional show that was taken for his then record label which was a subsidiary of the well-known EMI.

Back then, music and acting and showbiz wasn’t so polished or indeed bland as it is today and just as the Beatles popped outside their studios to take that famous photo on the Abbey Road crossing then when Davy was required to do a quick promotional shot, he decided to stand right here on this corner… reading a newspaper with a fag hanging from his mouth.

EMI HHQ was in Manchester Square and he lived just 5 minutes walk away at 39 Manchester Street.

I was on my way to meet some tourists at a nearby hotel when I found myself in Manchester Square. I have only been here once or twice over the decade I’ve been doing walking tours. It’s not an area hotly populated by hotels but something about the name stuck in my mind.

I realised it was a location from a fairly famous David Bowie photo. I’m not sure why I remembered it as I’d not seen the photo for many years but it’s one of the benefits of having something close to a photographic memory. Not only that but I realised I was already standing on the very spot which was handy as Manchester Square is quite a big old place.

I had to wait for a few minutes before accosting the first person who passed by. Thankfully a lady on her way to work came by after not too long a loitering and she gamely took my photo.

Not a bad re-working considering I was doing it and the location from a something like 10 year old memory.
