A few weeks ago I was giving a Churchill Walking Tour to a family of 8 in London. It was a cold wintery Sunday morning and the streets were largely quiet until towards the end of the tour we came across a filming unit down a side-street near Parliament.

There were a few doorways surrounded by sandbags and even a few old military vehicles parked up. They were making a huge new blockbuster film entitled ‘Blitz’.

The photo above shows so many interest details about how life was like. You can see all the little boxes that around peoples necks. These for gas masks. Also as I always tell my tourists, all the kerbstones were painted in black and white stripes. This is because of the blackout regulations, not street lights were allowed, buildings would have black black-out curtains over the windows and cars weren’t allowed to have their headlights on. This was to make it hard for the Luftwaffe to see where the towns and cities were on their bombing raids.

It was fascinating to see the street transformed with even a period and working red double-decker bus driving along.
One thing that is a bit different is how clean the buildings all are. Back then London generally was a dirty and blackened city, something that didn’t really change until after the use of coal was more or less phased out.
As I already do a Blitz themed tour I can only imagine how my bookings for it will skyrocket after a $200-$300 million live-action promotional film hits the big screen!
Great. You could also offer your many great ideas to some of these movie makers.
