Paying respects at the grave of Jane Austen

It’s impossible to be a fan of English literature without at least having read the odd work of Jane Austen if only to decide whether you prefer her stories to those of the Bronte sisters.

I must admit that until I planned by trip to Winchester, I had pretty much forgotten that this wonderful author was buried in the Cathedral. Knowing that she was however it mean’t I just had to go and say Hi in a rather modern and slightly tacky fashion that is all the rage these days; taking a photo at her grave.

Even though they are no longer alive, I often feel a connection with someone famous when I visit their grave. In fact I feel that in a way I have met them. I certainly have a quick chat to them and tell them how wondrous I think they are, if in deed that is the case as it is with Jane Austen.

Despite the large crowds of people outside Winchester Cathedral enjoying the sun and having family picnics as people must have done on the same spot for a millennia or two, the interior of the Cathedral is so vast and incredible to behold that those inside spread out into every little nook and cranny leaving most to walk over the grave of Jane Austen without even noticing.

Not for myself however and given it was quiet I just had to take a photo with my much more illustrious writing forebear.

“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope.”

And with that it seems like a fitting place to end my series of posts on the sights of Winchester. I hope you’ve enjoyed them, perhaps even enough to come visit with me Winchester Tour from London by First Class Train.

If visiting the graves of notable people in various ‘atmospheric’ cemeteries in London is your thing then why not try my London Cemetery Tour the next time you are in town.
