There are two ways to waste our lives on this planet. One is the way that some keep getting excited for the next Apocalypse, seemingly a little pointless in my mind and I can say that having survived several hundred in my life thus far, in fact there is another due today also. Well I guess I can take part in that if nothing better is going on but it better be like the one portrayed in This is The End and not some boring asteroid strike or even worse another no-show.
The other pointless way is to do as I do and mark off certain calendar dates because they feature prominently in films and TV shows that I like. For people of a certain age, this date was once a long way off and we all wondered what it would be like if we somehow managed to still be alive in the long-distant future or 21st October 2015 as was highlighted in Back To The Future 2. Back To The Future 2 was released in November 1989 and I distinctly remember going to watch it a few weeks later in the U.K. with my friend in the snow.
Back To The Future 2 gained somewhat of an iconic status, introducing many people to the concept of time-travel and time-streams and the theory of how inadvertently changing even a minute detail in the past can have stark effects back in the future.
The film also introduced us to hover boards amongst several other interesting things, some of which have come to pass and others which haven’t yet done so.
As far as Movie Days go, this is one of the nicer ones I’ve been involved with, fingers crossed again for the aforementioned apocalypse. Who else here was all psyched up for 16th October 1997 when the Jupiter 2 was launched in the popular 1960’s TV show ‘Lost in Space’.
Don’t worry if you didn’t notice this momentous event, perhaps you were tied up in Star Trek’s The Eugenics War as Khan Noonien Singh was busy laying much of the planet to waste. He jetted off into space in the late 1990s so if there is some tyrant somewhere that has vanished then perhaps it was him. For a while I thought Saddam Hussein was going to to play the part it looks like his execution stopped him from fleeing earth.
Sometime in the next few years we are all going to be subjected to control by machines created by giant corporations. Whether they be Google, Apple or a Terminator, it is anyones guess. Maybe someone, somewhere should release a film where something nice happens in the future. I nominate March 5th 2031 to be the day of the epic cuddle outbreak.
I’m not sure if I am going to be around on April 5th 2063 but hopefully I will be there to see First Contact with the Vulcans, I fear that might be my swan song of sci-fi movie dates unless something dramatic happens.
Still it could be for the best as the classic 1960’s film Daleks – Invasion Earth 2150 indicates the my entire town is devastated in an alien invasion. As Dr Who himself states “Watford is crawling with Daleks”.
No doubt Dr Who is successful as within 100 years London is booming again until part of it gets blown sky high by John Harrison aka Khan in 2259. Never mind, I’m sure it will recover.
Whether you plan to enjoy Back To The Future Day or the Apocalypse, I hope you have a safe and happy one 🙂

How about May 12th 2016, that gets us something to look forward to before the Terminators come and get us 🙂

I’ll go with that…

I’m not worried about apocalypses, not with the Doctor and Doc Brown and Marty McFly around! Great Scott! It would be a disaster if something would happen they couldn’t solve. Just remember, reverse the neutron flow before this gets heavy.

I love how Doc Brown says Great Scott! Dr Who managed to save the Vikings last week on UK TV by reversing the polarity of the neutron flow 🙂

Great post. I think the next movie date to look for will be 2017. This is the year the dystopian world of Stephen King’s Running Man begins. Watching our political system implode right now, and reality TV taking over, King’s vision doesn’t seem all that far fetched.

Thank-you. I didn’t realise The Running Man was a Stephen King story. It sounds easy to imagine one of these shows on a reality tv show or the equivalent of Fox. Given how unrepresentative politics can be these days I think some people would actually risk their lives on a TV show if they could really change things.

Yes, it was written under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman. I agree, there are far too many people who would willing submit to extreme challenges for a chance at fame and money. As far as our politics go, I was thinking that as the middle class becomes more and more marginalized, and our government more and more useless, we may yet see a Running Man scenario as a survival tactic.

Hmm, I could be here for First Contact with the Vulcans. I’d be 73.
I’m tempted to turn up wearing my prosthetic Vulcan ears, but they might be a bit offended by it.
But then again, is ‘offence’ an emotion?
I’ll be sure to ask them…

I am sure you will be there with your ears 🙂 I will be 89 so you may have to push me In my Captan Pike Chair if I am around!
