Along with Oxford, Cambridge is our other world renowned centre of university education and what an inspiring place it is. History seeps outs of every stone as you wander around this beautiful centre of learning and walking from one college to another through courtyards and into ornate chapels. Like Oxford instantly recognisable from numerous television series and films.
Why not walk over the famous bridges that span the River Cam or better still have a trip on the river by one of the boaters.
Cambridge also has its fair share of churches and museums and some shops selling chocolates and sweets that are just divine.
14 miles from Cambridge lies the small but beautiful city of Ely centred one of the most wonderful Cathedral buildings in the world. Ely was formerly an island in the marshy fens at the time of the Norman invasion in 1066 and is the traditional homeland of one of the great English rebels against the Normans. Incidentally, yes Ely does receive its name from the countless eel that used to populate the marshes here.
Outside the Cathedral is a selection of old English pubs offering drinks and food as well as a number of antique and second hand book shops. Ely is a little jewel just 80 miles from London but seemingly thousands of miles back in time.

It does, doesn’t it. I went there on a really sunny mid-winter morning and we could see it from miles and miles away. It just looks spectacular and the inside is equally impressive. Incredible how they built it so long ago.
